Which car insurance is right for you?

PIP, Comprehensive and Collision Explained.

Driving in the "Sunshine State" has its challenges: from sudden torrential rains to heavy traffic on I-95. But beyond the weather, what really confuses many is the policy. In Florida, it's not just about having insurance, but having the right one.

1. PIP (Personal Injury Protection)

The "Mandatory" Florida is one of the few states with the "No-Fault" system. This means that if you have an accident, your own insurance pays your medical expenses, regardless of who caused the crash.

What does it cover? Generally, 80% of your medical bills and 60% of your lost wages, up to a limit of $10,000.

Key Fact 2026: To activate these benefits, you must seek medical attention within the first 10 to 14 days after the accident! If you do not, you could lose the right to claim.

Do I need it? Yes, it is required by law to register any 4-wheeled vehicle in the state.

2. Collision

The Protector of Your Investment. Unlike PIP, which is for people, Collision is for your car.

What does it cover? Repairs to your vehicle if you collide with another car, a pole, a fence, or if your car rolls over.

Do I need it?

Yes: If you are financing or leasing the car, the bank will require it.

Maybe: If your car is old and the cost of insurance is almost equal to the value of the car, you could skip it. But remember: if you crash and you don't have Collision, the repair comes out of your pocket.

3. Comprehensive

The "Florida" Insurance If you live here, you know that danger is not always another driver. Sometimes it's a hurricane, a flood, or a deer crossing the street.

What does it cover? Damage from causes other than a collision: theft, vandalism, fires, hail, flooding, and (very important in Florida) windshield breakage.

The "Bonus" of Florida:

By state law, if you have Comprehensive coverage, insurers in Florida must repair or replace your damaged windshield without charging you a deductible.

How to decide? 3 Golden Questions

How much is your car worth today? If your car is worth $2,000 and your deductible is $1,000, paying for Collision may not be worth it.

Do you have savings for emergencies?

If you don't have Collision or Comprehensive and your car is totaled, can you buy another one tomorrow? If the answer is no, you need full coverage.

Are you ready for the changes in the law?

It is rumored that Florida may soon transition from a "No-Fault" system to one based on "At-Fault." Stay informed, as this could eliminate PIP and require you to purchase Bodily Injury Liability.

TIP

Don't settle for the minimum of $10,000. In a medical emergency in Florida, $10,000 can disappear in the first hour of hospitalization. Consider increasing your limits.
